In a points-type ignition, this can save the points from burning or pitting by giving the capability to accurately set the point gap. The best units will also have a dwell meter to check the amount of time the coil is being charged. Some of these lights will have two trigger buttons to advance the timing as opposed to a knob. This eliminates the magnetic losses and thermal nonlinearities associated with ferromagnetic cores, and it also gives eddy-current sensors much faster response times to resolve fast-moving targets, up to the MHz range. It will have a switch to toggle from RPM to timing. These differ from proximity and inductive displacement sensors in that they use an air-core coil instead of a ferromagnetic core. Like other timing lights, digital advance timing lights use a positive and negative connection to the vehicle’s battery for power. The better timing lights will also have a tachometer incorporated in the unit. A look at the knob will indicate the amount of advance at that RPM. These devices, known as inductive timing lights, use a fixed Xenon bulb to precisely time both two- and four-cycle motors. A turn of the knob will bring the mark back to the "0" mark on the pointer. As the RPM is increased to 2,000, the timing mark will move counterclockwise as the ignition advances the spark. Item Condition: Overall this timing light is in. Shipped With Care Autotune Inductive Timing Light. Comes with the owners manual and the original box. Great tool for marine, smowmobile, industrial, racing engines and other small engine timing. This unit is powered by two D cell flashlight batteries. There is no need to connect to a 12 volt battery for power. Once the mark has been adjusted to the "0" mark on the pointer, the knob will indicate the amount of degrees that the timing is advanced or retarded at that point. Overall this timing light is in very good condition. The timing light has a few marks and scratches consistent with normal use. The original battery powered timing light, built with quality to last. The purpose of the knob is to allow the timing light to advance and show the timing at different RPMs. Something to look out for with regard to a standard inductive timing light is a knob. As standard, it will be capable of timing both two-cycle and four-cycle engines. You start by setting the dial at zero and then time the motor to top dead center as you would with a traditional timing light. Anything above this idle will have to be interpolated. When the engine is at an idle, the knob should be adjusted so the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is on the "0" mark on the timing pointer. The inductive advance has the dial on the back of the light to adjust your timing advance. Another good feature is a knob that allows the timing light to advance the light to show the timing at different RPMs. The standard digital inductive timing light will be capable of timing both a two-cycle as well as a four-cycle engine. It will show the timing mark at an idle anything above an idle would have to be interpolated. The MSD timing light is a lot better than my brothers craftsman timing light, the MSD has no plastic parts on the inductive pick up. The standard inductive timing light is a nonadjustable xenon tube light.
